Professor and Head of Department of Animal, Plant and Soil Sciences

Job No.:562332

Work type:Continuing

About the organisation

Of all Australian universities, La Trobe is the most successful at combining accessibility with excellence, having developed a global reputation, while expanding to seven campuses across Victoria and New South Wales.

With more than 3000 undergraduate students, The Department of Animal, Plant and Soil Sciences (APSS) within the School of Agriculture, Biomedicine and Environment is a research powerhouse with a dynamic higher-degree-by-research program that reflects the expertise of the staff, resulting in ratings of ‘well-above-world-standard’ for research in agriculture and veterinary sciences, animal production, crop and pasture production and ecology in the most recent Excellence in Research for Australia Outcomes rankings.

The Department is host to a range of research centres and institutes including the ARC Industrial Transformation Research Hub in Medicinal Agriculture and the La Trobe Institute of Agriculture and Food and actively partners with industry and government, including CSIRO, the Victorian Government and Grains Research & Development Corporation.

About the role

The Head of Department is responsible for strategic, operational and disciplinary leadership. This includes implementing University and School strategies and plans within the Department, and ensuring that relevant targets and performance indicators are met. The position will have a particular focus on leading, supporting and managing the Department’s academic staff, programs, performance and resources. Critical to success in this role will be pursuing excellence, impact, and continued improvement in all aspects of the Department’s academic work, including the delivery of teaching programs, research and industry engagement.

The Head of Department will also play a lead role in creating the future of the Australian agriculture and food sectors with the nationally significant Australian Food Innovation Centre (AFIC), which will form a key piece of the La Trobe University City of the Future – the largest capital plan in the University’s history, transforming both the Bundoora Campus as well as Melbourne’s north.

About you

A Professor with a track record of outstanding academic achievement, you are a leader in a field of education and research relevant to the Department’s three disciplines (‘Plant Science’, ‘Crop Science’ and ‘Animal Physiology and Health’). Results-focused and adept at developing and implementing effective strategies and plans, you will ensure alignment with overarching strategic goals. Underpinning your exceptional leadership capabilities are your well-honed interpersonal, communication and presentation skills, and your ability to inspire and motivate. You have built and supervised teams and managed resources, and naturally establish strong relationships with existing and potential staff members, government and industry. You relish the opportunity to drive excellence in a dynamic and highly regarded department in a world-leading university.
